CONTENTS

The beginning of the school year is the time for forming teams for general and additional support, meetings with parents and specialists, giving and receiving feedback for children. Sometimes this feedback, as well as some important conversations between parents, teachers and professionals, happen in front of the children. Sometimes we as adults struggle to find the right words so that we can make a remark or correction in a way that is gentle enough but also effective enough for the child. Sometimes other children, especially in a newly formed group or class, ask questions about the difficulties and conditions of some children in their presence. Sometimes these conversations happen in the hectic everyday life of the family, in the middle of a pedagogical situation or in the corridors between classes. In these and other similar situations, we adults face the following challenges:

• How to talk to children with special needs about their difficulties without using diagnoses, labels and limiting statements?
• How to present their difficulties so as to spare their self-esteem and the developing personality?
• How to explain their difficulties so as to preserve their dignity and participation in the group/class?
• How to give feedback in front of the child so that we maintain mutual trust?
• How to talk about difficulties so as to stimulate and motivate children to develop their potential?

Virginia Vasileva – psychologist and psychotherapist, will try to answer these and other questions.
