Enrolment of children with special needs at school – development of skills and supportive environment

Project goal:

To finance the therapy of 5 children with special needs at Karin Dom. The children involved in the project work with a highly qualified team of specialists. Children also work very actively to develop social skills to facilitate their adaptation and admission to school, so to reduce the risk of dropping out of children with special needs from the general education system.

Activities:

An individual treatment plan is developed for each child according the needs. Depending on individual needs, children attend therapeutic sessions with:

• Physiotherapist;
• Child psychologist;
• Speech therapist;
• “”Montessori” Group

There are also socially integrated activities that support the children’s communication  with their peers. The parents are also consulted with a social worker about rights and opportunities for education and integration, changes in the social policy towards children with special needs, opportunities for social support.

Results:

Our specialists provide an individual therapeutic program for each child according to their needs. Psychologists, speech therapists, physiotherapists follow the therapy program and evaluate the progress of each child. We expect that the specific therapy will help children better prepare for admission to school – have basic knowledge of school subjects, improve communication and social skills.

In the “Montessori group, children together with special teachers develop their social and communicative skills. With the help of Montessori materials and supporting environment, the children and their peers prepare to enter school. Educators focus on the following areas: Language, Mathematics, Geography, History, Nature, work to improve fine motor skills. Our teachers also strive to develop children’s skills related to daily routine activities at home and in kindergarten. Culinary and art activities are also organized, outdoor activities to explore the surrounding nature are stimulated.

International Women’s Club – Sofia started its activity in 1989 and organized charity events for significant social causes. The biggest annual fundraising event is the Christmas Charity Bazaar, which unites the international diplomatic and business community for a truly exciting event. The bazaar allows artists from around the world to participate with their own handmade souvenirs, traditional food, clothing, literature, authentic music, folklore, culture and traditions. International Women’s Club – Sofia supports Karin Dom since 2006 and is our reliable partner in the therapeutic process.
