This three-day training is designed to teach participants how to properly implement the Picture Exchange Communication System, a unique alternative/augmentative communication system developed in the USA in 1985 by Andy Bondy, PhD, and Lori Frost, MS, CCC-SLP. Since then, PECS has successfully been implemented worldwide with thousands of learners of all ages who have various cognitive, physical and communication challenges including limited or no functional speech.
PECS promotes communication in a social context without the need for extensive prior training. Application of PECS begins with learning how to make a spontaneous request and continues to training in additional communication skills such as answering questions and commenting. An additional advantage of using the system in young children with autism and similar conditions is the high percentage of children who develop independent speech.
The training begins with an introduction to the Pyramid Approach to Education, which examines the key components in creating an effective educational environment. A historical overview of language training programs for non-verbal individuals is given along with how to make the setting rich in communicative possibilities.
In this course, participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role play opportunities. At the end of the training, participants will understand how to apply PECS to individuals with autism, related developmental disorders and/or limited communication skills.
