We Present to You the Winners of Karin Dom Architectural Competition – UNAS Studio

16 March 2020

Dear friends,

we are proud to present to you the architects who unanimously won the jury vote a few days ago with their architectural solutions for the new Karin Dom building among 174 projects from 48 countries on 5 continents.

UNAS Studio- Bilyana Asenova (Bulgaria) and Sasha Ciabatti (Italy) are a team based and working in Berlin, Germany, which also won the hearts of Karin Dom’s team with precision solutions, compact interior solutions and maximum green space.

“We met during a master’s program in Dessau (Germany) in 2013 and since then we have worked together and often participated in international competitions. The core of our work is the desire for simple, poetic and meaningful architecture. The competition for a new Karin Dom building attracted us because of the social function of the building and the opportunity for young architects to realize their ideas. We are very pleased with the result and look forward to working with Karin Dom Foundation. ” – Bilyana and Sasha shared during our meeting at Karin Dom.

Why the jury unanimously chose this particular project, hear from the chairman of the committee – Arch. Martin Hristov.

According to Aneta Vassileva – architectural observer, active participant in the competition processes in Bulgaria in recent years, co-founder of the WhAT Association (WhATA), as well as a member of the competition jury – “UNAS Studio won with a modest, compact and at first glance simple concept, but in fact well thought of as a location in the center of the terrain, as a function and as economical and energy efficiency. In this form, the building preserves most of the existing trees, leaves the largest yard possible, has an economical façade solution and creates a well-organized shared space inside, which gives many opportunities for a relaxed atmosphere and inclusion of children with special needs – all necessary conditions set in the concept note by the assignor. It is this efficiency of the building and the high likelihood that it will fit into the budget provided that envisage its timely successful completion.”

The pavilion structure with wooden construction by Denis Olegovich Antokhin from Russia ranked second.

Third place was for the bold series of unexpected spaces, designed by the studio atArchitecture from India.

The jury announced three special encouragement awards: to the Bulgarian studio POV, which made an open garage on the second floor of the building, to the Bulgarian studio NADA for their graphically impressive project with a skillfully created fairy tale atmosphere and to the Spanish Tuungoo arquitectos for their bold, modular and entirely wooden structure.

All projects can be viewed on the competition website HERE

The planned construction of the new Karin Dom building is possible thanks to the Municipality of Varna, which provided the land and to the Danish Velux Foundations, which fund the construction of the new building. The plot has an area of 2450 m2, located in the extended central part of Varna, in the immediate vicinity of the ideal city center – between Doiran and Kiril Shivarov streets.

Karin Dom plans to make the first dig for the new building this year and finalize it within the next 3 years.

We wish to thank the outstanding architects who participated in the competition, our wonderful jury and everybody who has been involved with us all these months!
