Training at Karin Dom with lecturer Mrs Hollie Hix-Small, Ph.D.

Within the project “Early intervention to prevent abandonment of children with disabilities” on 4th and 5th July 2012 at Karin Dom has been conducted a training to implement screening for child development “Questionnaires by age and stages – ASQ-3 ™ & ASQ: SE”.

The on time and accurate identification of infants and toddlers with disabilities and problems in their development is crucial for the timely provision of early intervention services. The questionnaires by age and stages are reliable, cost-effective and easy to use tool for detecting children with developmental problems. The screening system consists of questionnaires adapted to be filled out by the parents or by the people who take care of the children throughout defined time intervals during the first 5 years of their life. It monitors a possible problem or deviation in all areas of the baby/toddler development.

Speaker of the training was Ms. Holly Hicks-Small, Ph.D., Senior Program Manager of the “Early Childhood” program part of “Open Society” Foundation, a specialist with extensive research experience in the field of Early Childhood Development. This seminar was attended not only by specialists from Karin Dom but also from our partners from the “Early Intervention” Program – medical professionals from hospitals in Varna and Shumen from the maternity ward and the Medical University – Varna, a representative of the Child Protection Department – Varna, psychologist to the nurseries to the municipality of Varna and breastfeeding consultants from the Association “Colorful Future.” The participants highly appreciated the training and were satisfied that the questionnaires can be easily implemented in their work activities.
